Whats the Difference Between a Website and a Web App
Posted by : on Dec 08,2021 03:59 PM
As an experienced web development company in the USA, we often get asked what the difference between a website and a web app actually is. We explain it to our clients so they have a good understanding of what we’re talking about, but we realized that we should probably explain it to everyone else too! So, here’s the answer!
Web Apps vs Websites
Detailed Comparison Web apps are designed to work on desktop computers, tablets, and mobile devices, while websites are viewed exclusively on desktop computers. It’s important to note that many websites can also be accessed on tablets or mobile devices if they’re created using Responsive Web Design. However, responsive web design is not an alternative for native apps—it’s only intended for use by organizations that need to create multiple versions of their site in order to reach all users.
When To Use Web Apps
While apps are commonly associated with smartphones, they aren’t restricted to those devices. In fact, web apps—the ones you see on your desktop computer or laptop—have become increasingly popular in recent years. If you’re not sure whether you need an app or a website, here are some of their defining features: Web applications have more features than websites, but there is one important difference between these two types of digital properties.
When To Use Websites
Websites are great for companies that have something to sell online, or if you want a cool online presence. Companies like Airbnb, Amazon, eBay, Facebook, etc., all use websites to make it easy for customers to purchase items/services from them. Check out Joomla’s website builder. It makes it easy for you to create your own awesome website within minutes.
General Differences
The biggest difference between websites and web apps is one of scope. Websites are single pages that can be accessed by any visitor to your domain, with no login required. Web apps are standalone programs or online tools accessed through a browser, which you access only after logging in to your account. You could think of web apps as an advanced version of websites--they do everything that sites do, but they're more like full-fledged software programs than simple resources on the web. Let’s compare some more specific differences
