What Makes the Kilim Area Rug so Special
Posted by : on Jul 08,2016 12:52 PM
One of the most fascinating aspects about
oriental rugs for sale is the many different ways in which
they are made. In some areas of central Asia they are hand knotted and weavers use traditional designs that date back thousands of years. In other areas, they are woven from different types of threads such as the Ikat fabric thread. In all cases the artisan form is in constant change and innovation, from the way thread is made to the design incorporated into the Oriental rugs for sale. The result is a variety of Kilim area rugs to choose from, and getting through the sea of choices and terminology can be quite a struggle.
To make sense of this exotic world of weaving we have put together a set of tips to help you.
The terms that are most important to know are hand loomed, hand-knotted, hand-tufted and power-loomed with each type of production offering its own special qualities.
Hand woven Kilim Area Rugs
These are known as a flat-weave rug and offers a traditional creation from Central Asia. It is a type of message form one culture to another across space and time.
The Kilim area rugs are woven with many different types of material. These can range from Cotton, silk and animal hair (goat, camel, or horse), combined with wool. Sometimes even gold or silver thread and beads are interwoven into the rug.
Often the rugs are made with the Ikat fabric dyeing method. This is a dyeing technique that makes years more resistant. It is a process where the individual years are tightly wrapped and the dye is applied in a desired pattern. The yarns can then be dyed again in another pattern and color. Often the process is repeated multiple times to produce the ikat fabric that is used in the final weaving.
This Oriental Rugs Sale Process
Kilims are usually woven using a slit weave technique. The slit is the gap left between two different blocks of color. The weaver brings the weft around the last warp of a certain area and then the next color is added. The weaver brings this second color around to the adjacent warp.
Weavers bring the threads tight together to create the Ikat fabric effect and geometrical patterns. This is the weave that produces the bold, geometrical pattern that is similar to the Ikat fabrics sold by the yard.
The Kilim area rug weave is bold and patterned more boldly than the plain weave. Most kilims are geometrical in shape, much the same as the Ikat fabrics that are so popular in Central Asia.
