Should I Hire an Armed or Unarmed Security Team
Posted by : on Apr 11,2021 12:46 PM
When it comes to hiring security, you want to make sure you've got the best team of people with the right tools and training to provide you with the highest security possible. So when looking for a security team that is right for you, you may find yourself wondering: Should I hire an armed or unarmed security team? The answer to this question depends largely on why you are hiring the security team-is it an event, is it for a residential area, is it for personal use? Here, we've outlined the times when an armed security and unarmed security team will be best put to use.
Armed Security Teams
Armed security means exactly what it sounds like: the security team you're hiring is armed. Armed security teams have a large effect in the community and can greatly alter the atmosphere of a building, event, or workplace. Armed security teams should be limited only to those businesses and individuals who truly need them.
So how do you know if you do truly need an armed security team? Well, if you already use the police to provide your security coverage then an armed security team is right for you. If you expect that your security team will have to perform quasi law enforcement functions then, again, an armed security team is right for you.
- You should consider hiring an armed security team if:
- You are in a highly sensitive environment
- - There is something of substantial value that needs protecting
- - Your neighboring businesses are also armed
- - Your business is vulnerable to attack- have you already experienced security breaches, or are you in an area or industry which often experiences security breaches?
- - Your employees are comfortable with armed guards
Unarmed security teams
Unarmed security guards are just as well trained as armed guards; however, they do not carry firearms with them. If you do not currently have a security team, and your aim is simply to show the presence of security to deter crime or halt the occurrence of petty crimes, then an unarmed security team is right for you.
Instances in which an unarmed security team should be hired include, but are not limited to:
- Retail
- Shopping malls
- - Grocery stores
- - Colleges and university campuses
- - Apartment buildings and residential communities
- - Vacant property
- - High-rise buildings
- - Office complexes
- - Construction areas
While many of these decisions can be made by you yourself, many security teams also offer the option to conduct a physical security assessment. Physical security assessments will be conducted by a trained team of professionals and will asses factors such as:
- Access issues
- Potential problem areas
- Code issues
- Industry standards
- Fire safety
- Your loss prevention program
- Emergency preparedness
- Efficiency of current security programs (if you have any)
- Your location and environment
- The type of business you are in
Whether you chose an armed or unarmed security team for yourself or your business, know that getting security presence is a great way to deter crime and increase a feeling of safety within any environment.
