Christmas Celebrations
Christmas is celebrated all over the world
on the 25th December to mark the birth of Jesus Christ. December 25 was
declared a federal holiday in the United States in 1870. Since then Christmas
Day has become a steadily more important holiday.
People celebrate Christmas Day in many ways. The original meaning of Christmas is a special church service, or mass, to celebrate the birth of Christ. Many erect Christmas trees, decorate their homes and gardens with lights, visit family or friends, exchange gifts and much more. Many Churches and communities organize special events. Family feasts are also a part of Christmas Day celebrations.
The increase in gifting to children from
their parents and other relatives through the mythical figure Santa Claus has
led to Christmas Day becoming an increasingly commercialized holiday, with a
lot of families spending a large part of their income on gifts and food.
While Government offices, organizations,
businesses and schools are closed, many people visit relatives or friends. In
general, public life closes down completely.
Christmas finds its true meaning against
the backdrop of Easter. It’s all about the God who loves us so
extravagantly, that he chose to send his own Son to live among us and to die
for us. Regardless of all the other frills of the day and the season, if you
can keep this as your focus, your celebrations will be truly rich and
enjoyable.
While there is no end to the ways one
can enjoy Christmas Celebrations- we have figured out few that may help you make
the day all the more blissful for you.
- 1. Those who aren’t headed to church, volunteering on Christmas is a
better way of celebrating the day. Get your whole family to volunteer at a
local shelter or hospital on Christmas Day? This is certainly one of the
non-traditional ways to celebrate Christmas! You may never know how much it
means to the people in
those shelters when you volunteer your time to help out, and especially on a
day like Christmas Day.
- 2. Remembering the poor – by offering them special dinners, gift programs
for poor kids, soup kitchens etc. Find someone who couldn't really afford
Christmas, and make it happen for them.
- 3. Check with your local animal shelter and see if you and your friends
can help give the animals their baths and feeds.
- 4.Drop anonymous notes on your teachers' desks thanking them for sharing
their gift of teaching with you. You may want to include a message about the
greatest gift of all, Jesus!
- 5.DO SOMETHING AS A FAMILY this could be one of the most interesting ways
to celebrate Christmas? Do something together as a family! Organize your church
pageant, build a float for the town parade, or get a bake sale for charity
together. You will be amazed by the effect that working together can have on
your family!
- 6. Call friends and relatives. Throw in a surprise call to someone who wasn’t
expecting it. This is already part of many families’ Christmas days, and
rightly so.
